This error had my father’s notebook not connecting to his ISP through the dial-up connection he uses.
The attempt to connect to ISP was failing with an error code 1717. The event log was logging a 20227 Event ID.
When a Vista Notebook goes into “sleep” mode, the synchronisation between the state of the modem hardware and the software driving the modem can get “out of step”. Resulting in the software and hardware not communicating correctly, and throwing this error.
Restart the machine. This gets the software and hardware back in step, and you can connect to the internet again.
Alter the Control Panel – Power Options to Sleep only when I tell you to. Having the machine drop into “sleep mode”, when connected looks like it was the circumstance which caused this problem to start.
